How Are Signet Rings Made? The Art Behind the Heirloom

Artisan Jewellery Australian Made Custom Jewellery Handmade Jewellery Melbourne Jewellers Men’s Rings Signet Rings Tiger’s Eye Jewellery

Signet rings have been a symbol of identity and style for centuries. Once used to seal documents with a unique family crest, today they remain powerful symbols of tradition, legacy, and personal expression. But how exactly are these timeless pieces made?

At Lord Coconut, every signet ring is handcrafted in Australia by skilled artisans—no mass production here. Let’s take a closer look at the fascinating process of how a signet ring goes from concept to creation.

1. Design & Concept

Every great signet ring starts with an idea. Whether it's a classic oval face, a square modern design, or a gemstone feature, the design phase is all about purpose and personality. The artisan sketches the form, considering proportions, comfort, and whether it’ll feature engraving or a stone like tiger’s eye.

2. Wax Carving or CAD Modelling

For traditional jewellers, a block of wax is hand-carved into the desired ring shape. More contemporary approaches might involve CAD (computer-aided design), but at Lord Coconut, the handmade heritage remains strong.

This stage defines the ring’s shape, thickness, face, and size—readying it for casting.

3. Lost Wax Casting

The wax model is encased in plaster and heated, causing the wax to melt away. This creates a negative mould that molten metal (gold, silver, titanium, etc.) is poured into. Once cooled, the plaster is broken away, revealing the raw metal ring.

4. Filing, Sanding & Polishing

After casting, the ring is rough around the edges—literally. It’s then carefully filed, sanded, and polished by hand to reveal smooth, crisp edges and a brilliant finish. If a stone is to be set, a seat is prepared.

5. Engraving & Finishing Touches

Engraving, such as family crests, initials, or decorative symbols, is often added at this point. Techniques range from hand-engraving with a burin to laser etching. Final polish and inspection complete the process—ready for a lifetime of wear.

Two Stunning Examples from Lord Coconut

To see this craftsmanship in action, here are two standout pieces from our collection:

  • Standard Signet Ring – A timeless piece with a minimal yet bold aesthetic. Its clean form makes it perfect for everyday wear or custom engraving.

  • Square Tiger’s Eye Signet Ring – Featuring a hand-set tiger’s eye gemstone, this striking ring merges natural beauty with geometric design. A modern heirloom in every sense.

Why Choose Handmade Signet Rings?

  • Uniqueness – No two rings are alike, especially when handcrafted.

  • Sustainability – Locally made using ethical practices and materials.

  • Support for Local Artisans – Each piece supports Australia’s creative makers.
